So, you've decided you want to try one of CeraVe's cult-favorite, best-selling moisturizers, but you can't quite figure out what the differences are? We've all been there, don't worry!
Come with us as we compare the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream vs CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion side-by-side to help you decide which is right for you. Enjoy!
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream vs CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion
Unsurprisingly, these sister moisturizers have a lot in common. They both boast the same nourishing base of essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid, they are both intended for those with normal to dry skin, and they both claim to moisturize & help restore the protective skin barrier. These similarities make even more sense when you realize that their ingredients lists share 19 (out of their total of 24) ingredients.
That said, it's the subtle differences that ultimately set them apart (and might make you reach for one over the other). The Moisturizing Cream notably contains Petrolatum (aka Petroleum Jelly), which is fantastic for relieving and healing dry, damaged skin, but it's also what makes the cream itself thick and rich in texture. It also features Tocopherol, which is a vitamin that further helps to strengthen the skin's protective barrier.
The Moisturizing Lotion, on the other hand, only additionally contains emulsifiers that serve to improve the feel of the lotion, and it is notably completely free from oil. This makes for a very lightweight, non-greasy, fast-absorbing texture.
Knowing this, the contrast immediately becomes obvious. The Daily Moisturizing Lotion is intended as more of a typical moisturizer to round-off your daily skincare routine (which makes sense given the 'Daily' in its name), whereas the Moisturizing Cream is something you would swap into your routine from time to time when your skin needs some extra TLC (i.e. it's clearly slightly more geared towards "skin in need" such as dry, damaged skin).
Having tried them for myself, though, it might be worth noting that while the differences on paper are plain to see, the consistencies and feel of the moisturizers are actually incredibly similar in practice (which you might be able to tell from the photos above). My advice remains the same (favoring facts over anecdote), but if you're stuck in a bind, you can safely reach for either of the two and expect similar results.

Other points of note include: price, in which they are identical per fluid ounce, and both are indeed free from fragrance. Nasties-wise, it might also be worth pointing out that the Daily Moisturizing Lotion does contain Parabens which have been known to sensitize skin. The Moisturizing Cream is completely free from irritants.
