Glytone vs AmLactin 2023 (The Definitive Guide)

If you’re someone who lives with dry skin—regardless of the season—we understand how itchy, painful, and uncomfortable it can be. Thus, finding a lotion that can hydrate and exfoliate will make all the difference.

But that begs the question: which moisturizers are best for your skin’s condition?

Well, we wouldn’t recommend just any lotion here. The two we have in mind are formulated quite differently, yet work to achieve the same results: soft, even-textured skin.

So, allow us to introduce Glytone Exfoliating Body Lotion and AmLactin Daily Moisturizing Lotion.

Read on to see which is best for you.

Glytone vs AmLactin

Comparison

We’d like to start with a slight warning that AmLactin may cause mild stinging or irritation should this lotion be used on sensitive or broken skin. And though it might be tempting to use this moisturizer on the face, they strongly advise against it. Now, as suggested by its name, AmLactin’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion is gentle enough for daily use with a lactic acid concentration of 12%.

This lightweight, non-greasy solution aims to jumpstart skin’s cell renewal process to reveal softer, nourished, and more radiant skin. Moreover, if you’re like me and have keratosis pilaris—a (harmless yet unsightly) condition where the skin produces too much keratin and clogs hair follicles—then this is the perfect formula for you.

Since their products contain alpha-hydroxy acids—which make the skin more photosensitive—sunscreen is a must after each use. Given that AmLactin has been an affordable go-to for years, it’s amassed over 23,000 reviews on Amazon and achieved 4.4-star rating.

Glytone’s also aims to erase bumps and dryness, but with a different AHA: 17.5% free acid value Glycolic Acid. This rather high-concentration formula works overtime to exfoliate dead skin to reveal a smoother dermis. Additionally, its other noteworthy ingredients include pharmaceutical grade petroleum and allantoin, which protect and hydrate the skin barrier as well as nourishing the skin.

Like AmLactin, this lotion is not meant to be used on the face, and you should apply sunscreen after each use. Not surprisingly, this magic potion has 4.7 stars after 109 reviews.

AmLactin’s Lotion is $13.97 for a 7.9oz bottle on Amazon, while Glytone’s formula is $44 for 8.4oz. on their site.

It appears that both lotions are effective but differ greatly cost-wise. Therefore, this tossup may be a matter of what you’re willing to spend (though, more on that later!). However, we’d like to (hopefully) make this decision easier by investigating their brand ethics.

According to a July 2021 report from The Derm Review, AmLactin’s brand is cruelty-free and vegan. Though lactic acid is often sourced from dairy, their brand takes the plant-based route when sourcing their AHAs. While this is great, we were unable to find anything about their sustainability initiatives (if any) or if they’ve donated to any charities.

We can reveal that Glytone is cruelty-free, but the company is not 100% vegan. Likewise for Glytone, we were unsuccessful in locating information around their packaging and manufacturing and if it’s eco-friendly, as well as if they’ve committed to any philanthropic efforts.

Deciding between the two is more a matter of skin type than cost. AmLactin's formula is much gentler, and therefore more suitable for sensitive skin. Glytone's is far more potent—and perhaps more effective—but we wouldn't recommend it to those with irritable skin.
