Kerastase Resistance vs Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair

Between heat styling, dyeing, environmental stressors, and myriad other factors, the health of your tresses can take quite a hit over time. While having a quality shampoo, conditioner, and styling products can make a difference, you may still need to call in some backup.

What kind of backup? Well, we reckon a hair mask can do the trick. Two that have earned their fair share of hype—Kerastase Masque Therapiste and Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask—are certainly worth your consideration. But before you choose one mask over the other, let's take a closer look at each.

Comparison

If your mane is frail and brittle or over-processed, Kerastase aims to reverse all the damage it's endured. Created to penetrate the core of hair to rebuild strands from the inside out, this buttery mask strengthens hair’s elasticity. It achieves this through the impressive list of superstar ingredients in its exclusive Fibra-Kap formula. Most notably, this includes six amino acids and one wheat protein hydrolat (hydrolats are the natural waters produced when plants are distilled). And though Kerastase doesn’t have reviews for the Masque Therapiste on their site, it’s earned a 3.9-star review on Sephora (with only 37 reviews).

Briogeo’s deep conditioning mask is scientifically proven to decrease hair breakage after just two uses. It’s suitable for all hair types and has achieved cult status as a 5x Allure Beauty Award winner. Moreover, it’s made with 97% naturally derived ingredients, such as rosehip oil, almond oil, B-vitamins, and algae extract for supreme hydration. Thus, you can expect reduced frizz, enhanced shine, and restored nourishment. And for those who are wondering: Don’t Despair, Repair! is free of sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, and artificial dyes. With over 3,000 reviews, Briogeo’s mask has a rating of what appears to be almost 4.5 stars. (However, the actual rating isn’t listed for some reason.)

On Sephora, Kerastase’s mask is listed at $64 for a 6.8oz jar, while Briogeo’s is $39 for an 8oz jar. (Yikes!)

You can probably tell which mask we’re leaning towards, but let’s take a closer look at each brand first.

Packaging is at the forefront of Kerastase’s sustainability pledge, which is now made from 20%-95% recycled materials. They also offer refillable shampoo bottles and pouches for repeated reuse. They aim to replace more than 60% of their product packaging with recycled packaging by 2025 and have 100% of their plastic come from a recycled source by 2030. Though they claim to be cruelty-free, Cruelty-Free Kitty reports that they may test on animals via suppliers or third parties. And while they aren’t 100% vegan, they do offer some vegan options.

Briogeo is a Black-owned company that has always prioritized clean, ethically sourced ingredients. They’re a cruelty-free and vegan company (and they also offer many gluten-free formulas). Further, their sustainability efforts are just as impactful. Briogeo doesn’t use aerosols or microplastics; all of their bottles, tubes, jars, and caps are 100% recyclable; all of their high-density polyethylene bottles are 25% PCR (and some are even 100%); 100% of their boxes are recyclable; and as of 2021, they’ve fully removed plastic trays from their hair care kits.

Just as we thought, Briogeo came out on top not just in terms of effectiveness, but business ethics, too.
