Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask vs Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Much like lip balm, lip masks prevent the drying out and chapping of lips. However, whereas you might need to apply a lip balm regularly throughout the day, with a lip mask you generally only need to apply it a couple times per week for the maximum effect. They also help make your lips look plumper—especially right after using the mask—and in a more natural way than lip liner.

Two of the best lip masks you can buy are the Kissu Lip Mask by Tatcha and Lip Sleeping Mask by Laneige. Beyond the obvious differences between the jars, we're going to have to dive straight into their formulas to start seeing any real differences.

First and foremost, it's worth establishing the fact that the way lip masks work is by being extra rich in emollients to lock in moisture, and packed with botanical extracts for their natural, protective and nourishing benefits. These are the two main types of ingredients we'll be looking out for as we compare the formulas side-by-side.

Sure enough, the most commonly repeated word in each of their ingredients lists is 'extract', so you already know that we're in for a treat. The Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask most notably contains Japanese Peach Extract, a traditional Japanese beauty secret used centuries ago to treat damaged lips. It works in tandem with Orange Peel Extract to revitalize and calm irritation. Laneige don't highlight any one extract in particular for their Lip Sleeping Mask, but we can tell you that it's full of berries famed for their inimitable antioxidant protection and vitamin content. Obviously it's not possible to separate the two purely based on their botanical contents, though, so we'll have to dig a little deeper.

Next up on the agenda is consistency/texture. Due to the inclusion of Silicones, Microcrystalline Wax, Synthetic Wax, Candelilla Wax, and Carnauba Wax, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is exceedingly thick and, well... waxy. It also features the rich emollient Shea Butter which further adds to the thickness. Though some might find this off-putting, it does mean that it boasts excellent staying-power (which is perfect for an overnight mask).

Contrastingly, however, the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask is rather jelly-like and relatively 'thin'. This is due to the omission of wax and silicone, and the fact that its two main emollients are Squalane and Japanese Camellia Oil which are best known for their weightless feel. The staying-power might not be quite as good, but the lighter texture will be more preferable to some (myself included) and there's no significant trade-off with regards to results.

The Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask definitely leaves a glossier finish if that's what you're after, however the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask does boast a bit of a different type of shimmer due to the addition of sparkly Mica in its formula.

In practice, they are both silky, luxurious products that feel sumptous on the lips, and the results are incredibly similar, with both yielding plumper, dewier, healthier lips overnight, and further improvements within a matter of weeks. When it comes to choosing between the two, it ultimately just boils down to your preference for texture. If you prefer the idea of a balm-like, rich formula, then the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is for you. Otherwise—or if you generally tend to prefer a lighter texture when it comes to lip care—then the jelly-like Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask would be better suited to you.
