Aveeno vs. Jergens

Aveeno vs Jergens: Battle of the drugstore body lotions. Find out which one leaves your skin feeling silky smooth.

desc

We all know and love Aveeno and Jergens; they have been consistently delivering quality skin care products—especially skin-nourishing lotions—for decades now.

Which is better, you ask? Let’s discuss the difference between these two tried-and-true veterans. Aveeno vs Jergens - let’s get into it.

Aveeno vs Jergens Lotion

If you've been following along with our other brand comparisons, this won't be in quite the same format that you're used to. Aveeno and Jergens just have so many different lotions to cover, yet the similarities and differences are more or less the same across the board. So as not to repeat ourselves endlessly, we're going to be comparing their most popular lotions side-by-side, and then we'll tell you our other top picks in a more quick-fire fashion towards the end.

An amazing lotion is one that leaves your skin feeling soft, hydrated, and soothed. If you have sensitive skin or skin that becomes irritated with ease, Aveeno's Daily Moisturizing Lotion and Jergens' Ultra Healing Moisturizer are among the best in these arenas. However, there are some differences between them that may make you reach for one over the other.

2024 update: Aveeno has modified their packaging to emphasize its purpose as a body moisturizer (as opposed to for the face). It might also be worth noting that Jergens' packaging varies from retailer to retailer, but the formula remains the same.

With both lotions aiming to repair, heal, and deeply nourish dry skin back to health—and both boasting thousands of thankful reviews (indicating that they must be fairly good at least)—we're going to have to dig a little deeper into their formulas to find any real differences.

The Jergens Ultra Healing Lotion contains a unique illuminating HYDRALUCENCE blend, as well as Vitamins C, E, and B5. They're not quite clear what the "HYDRALUCENCE blend" is, although inspection of the ingredients list reveals that it might be a combination of Glycerin, Tocopherol, and other moisturizing agents. We know for sure what the powerful antioxidant Vitamins C, E, and B5 are, though: Vitamin C hydrates and brightens, Vitamin E protects, and Vitamin B5 moisturizes while enhancing the skin's healing process.

The Jergens lotion absorbs quickly, makes skin feel nice and smooth without a sticky consistency, and it locks in moisture for up to 48 hours.

The Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is formulated with Prebiotic Colloidal Oatmeal, a powder produced by the fine grinding of oats. It has intense moisturizing properties that help prevent water loss from the skin, and is a prebiotic with the ability to support the skin's microbiome.

The minimal, fast-absorbing, non-sticky formula improves the moisture barrier from the very first use, and is clinically proven to lock-in moisture to rehydrate even the driest, sensitive skin types.

Though both lotions may very well be fast-absorbing and non-sticky, they are not intended for use on facial skin—despite an absence of contraindications from either brand to this nature. Besides, they are far too thick for that, and both brands offer specific facial moisturizers (see: Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer or Jergens Natural Glow Face Moisturizer), if that's what you're looking for.

The ambiguity regarding key ingredients in Jergens' lotion doesn't exactly fill you with confidence, nor does the fact that it includes sensitizing Fragrance and Parabens when it is targeted at those with sensitive, extra dry skin concerns.

Ultimately, we prefer the trusty Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion.
